Betar in the 1990s - the ex-Bogrim who came to enjoy the afternoon |
Betar Melbourne celebrated the 80th Anniversary of World Betar on March 14th, 2004. It was truly amazing to see so many – over 200 – past and present faces of Betar all congregated in one room. As Dr. Ron Weiser, President of the ZFA writes: "Betar has become a fixture in the Australian Jewish Community. Over the past 80 years Betar has contributed to instilling a strong Jewish identity and love for Israel in our youth." Betarim across all generations participated with enthusiasm in what proved to be a truly entertaining event. We heard passionate speeches given by Betarim from the 1940s all the way to the current Rosh Hanagah Artzit (federal head of Betar Australia) and a video sent to us from the Betar Olim really brought us back to why everyone had stayed in Betar, after all - we all joined for different reasons. While the evening definitely primarily served as a chance to catch up with old friends and reminisce, it also showed us – the current youth – just how valuable Zionist movements are today. |
