The Hallel Prayer
"In Praise of the Lord"
Hallel is a prayer of praise and thanksgiving which congregations chant on Jewish holidays. It consists of six Psalms (113-118) sung to traditional tunes, usually together with the morning prayers, (Shacharit)* which precede the festival Torah reading. The graphic above is from Psalm 118:21-29 The Hallel prayer is also chanted during some evening prayers (Ma'ariv)* on special occasions. Halllel is chanted on the following six festivals of Biblical origin: Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, Simchat Torah, Pesach, Shavuot, Rosh Chodesh. It is also chanted on Chanukah, a festival of later origin. Many congregations, especially in Israel, also chant Hallel on two new festivals in the Jewish calendar: Israel's Independence Day (Yom Ha'atzmaut) and Jerusalem Day (Yom Yerushalayim) |

Depending on the Festival, congregations chant either the full Hallel or the partial Hallel. |
