Australians Donate NEW AUSTRALIAN STUDENT INFORMATION AND ADMISSIONS CENTRE DEDICATED AT THE HEBREW UNIVERSITYJerusalem, June 3, 2003 - A first in Israel - a state-of-the-art student information and admissions centre, the gift of Australian Friends of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, was dedicated during the recently concluded 66th meeting of the university Board of Governors. Among those participating in the ceremony were leaders of the Australian Friends, top university officials, and Australian Ambassador to Israel Ross Burns.
The new centre is located in the Goldsmith Building on the Mount Scopus campus.
It serves as a primary "port of call" for both applicants and students in that it concentrates, under one roof, both the existing Department of Student Administration as well as the new information centre.
This makes it possible for students to obtain all of the information and services that they require regarding such areas as study programs, eligibility requirements, registration, financial aid, counseling and dormitories.
The centre has been designed to provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with spacious lounges and waiting areas, and modern, computerized information systems. The establishment of the centre was made possible through the generosity of the late Henry Krongold - who received an honorary doctor of philosophy degree last year from the Hebrew University, shortly before his death - and his family, as well as other donors from Melbourne, Sydney and Perth.
Former Hebrew University President Prof. Hanoch Gutfreund said that while some of the best universities abroad have such centres, the Hebrew University is the first to establish one in Israel.
The centre is doubly important, stressed Gutfreund, because of the necessity to attract and encourage more young people to study and live in Jerusalem.Among those speaking at the ceremony, in addition to Prof. Gufreund, were Ambassador Burns; Robert Simons, President of the Australian Friends of the Hebrew University; Hebrew University President Prof. Menachem Magidor; and Billy Shapira, director of the Student Administration Department.
Eliyahu Honig, associate vice-president of the university, was the moderator. At the dedication are (left to right)

DEDICATED AT HEBREW UNIVERSITYJerusalem, June 3, 2003 - A fourth Berel Ginges-Australia Computer Centre at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem was dedicated during the recently concluded 66th meeting of the university's Board of Governors. This center, in the Sprinzak Buiilding on the Edmond J. Safra Campus of the university at Givat Ram, comprises about 150 computer stations for use by students during extended hours, plus auxiliary equipment such as printers, scanners, CD writers and DVD players.
The centre has all of the software and communications protocols required by students to pursue their assignments. The centre also includes computer classrooms and a special design feature that enables small groups of students to work together in "clusters," each on his own individual computer station, but still being able to maintain eye and ear contact with others in the group and/or with an instructor.
Other Ginges-Australia Computer Centres have been opened in recent years through the generosity of Berel and Agnes Ginges and other Australian donors on the Mount Scopus, Ein Kerem and Rehovot campuses of the Hebrew University, thus making it possible in all for thousands of students in various fields of study to benefit from these facilities.
Among those present at the dedication of the newest center were Robert Simons, President of the Australian Friends of the Hebrew University, and Michael Dunkel, President of the university's New South Wales Friends organization.
